A bigger splash:Painting after Performance

Tate Modern: Exhibition

14 November 2012 – 1 April 2013
This exhibition will take a new look at the dynamic relationship between performance and painting since 1950. Contrasting key paintings by Jackson Pollock and David Hockney, the exhibition considers two different approaches to the idea of the canvas as an arena in which to act: one gestural, the other one theatrical. The paintings of the Vienna Actionists or the Shooting Pictures of Niki de St Phalle will be re-presented within the performance context that they were made, and juxtaposed with works by artists such as Cindy Sherman or Jack Smith that used the face and body as a surface, often using make-up in work dealing with gender role-play. The exhibition proposes a new way of looking at the work of a number of younger artists whose approach to painting is energised by these diverse historical sources, drawing upon action painting, drag and the idea of the stage set.

Exhibition of Sculptures

New exhibition at San Francisco airport presents historic imagery from the world's oldest living religion
Indian Hindu sculpture and historic images from the collections of the Asian Art Museum provide a glimpse at profound expressions of veneration from the world’s oldest living religion. The exhibited objects range from seventh- and eighth-century temple images carved from stone to elaborately rendered wooden sculptures made more than one thousand years later for use in religious processions. All reflect the divine, here on earth and throughout the universe, in its many manifestations.

Hindu Sculpture from the Collections of the Asian Art Museum is located in Terminal 3, Boarding Area F from Saturday, August 25, 2012 through Sunday, February 24, 2013. The exhibition is located post-security and is only accessible to passengers ticketed for travel through Terminal 3. There is no charge to view the exhibition.

3D Art Magic

Originating in Italy in the mid 16th century, 3D pavement art has come a long way, not only in terms of the techniques used, but also with regard to the designs. Though the art form is till now quite uncommon in India, it is a common form of street painting in parts of Europe. But thanks to artist Sivadas, Mumbaikars can enjoy this unique art form now.

THE MYSTERIOUS BEAUFOY TRUST

GASWORKS
THE MYSTERIOUS BEAUFOY TRUST
A film inspired by the former Beaufoy Institute
by the peer group of Gasworks' Participation Programme Even Better Together
THURSDAY 23 AUGUST 2012
4.30 – 7pm

FREE - ALL WELCOME
Refreshments will be served

Join us for an exciting premiere of The Mysterious Beaufoy Trust, a film developed by the peer-group of Gasworks' Participation Programme Even Better Together.

The film visualises the research and ideas that have developed over nine months of workshops, inspired by the former Beaufoy Institute, a significant landmark in Vauxhall. Through the course of the project,Even Better Together's peer-group have imagined themselves as members of 'The Mysterious Beaufoy Trust' (MBT), a fictional group that occupies and manages the Beaufoy buildings. Playing with notions of ritual, mystery and secrecy, the film documents the MBT’s quirky and colourful ‘initiation ceremony’ performance.

The screening is accompanied by other art work made during the workshops, including the initiation ceremony robes and the MBT's Constitution.

More on the Even Better Together Peer-Group (EBTers):

The EBTers is an intergenerational peer-group involving local families and residents living in housing estates in the Vauxhall and Oval area. Other members include emerging artists and Even Better Together project partners. Working collaboratively, the group develops a variety of projects, events and interventions for and within the local community.

Collage captures Pollock's demise

A show devoted to a pivotal Abstract Expressionist at the Ronchini Gallery in London (10 October-24 November) throws new light on the tragic death of Jackson Pollock. Conrad Marca-Relli (1913-2000) was a trailblazing collagist, using materials such as vinyl plastics, fabrics and aluminium. But onecollage in particular reflects a turning point in Marca-Relli's life: the night Pollock died after losing control of his car at Springs in the Hamptons in August 1956. The artist, who refused to display the piece to the public until 2000 shortly before his death, wrote: “We walked a short distance and then I could see the form of a body stretched out on the side of the road. It was Jackson. He was flat on his back, his eyes open. There was no blood, no scars, in fact he looked so beautiful. I just stared. I must have stayed that way for quite a while and then I heard the officer’s voice. 'Do you know this man?' 'Yes,' I said listlessly, 'yes, it’s Jackson Pollock'." The forthcoming retrospective "Conrad Marca-Relli: The Architecture of Action" is curated by David Anfam and Kenneth Baker.
